What Does a Nanny Cost in Manhattan? 2026 Salary Guide by Neighborhood
Manhattan is the most expensive nanny market in the United States — and the most transparent once you know the structure. Rates vary less by neighborhood than by candidate profile, but expectations around schedule, travel and benefits differ between the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side and downtown. Here is what families should realistically budget in 2026.
The baseline numbers
- Career nanny, full-time live-out: $35–$50 per hour
- Educator-qualified or multilingual nanny: $90,000–$140,000 per year
- Rota or travel-heavy nanny: $120,000–$180,000+ per year
- Newborn care specialist: $40–$60 per hour, typically booked in 12–16 week blocks
- Housekeeper-nanny hybrid roles: $30–$45 per hour depending on scope
Neighborhood nuances
On the Upper East Side, formal experience and school-run fluency sit at the top of the requirement list — candidates with references from comparable co-op households command the highest rates. Upper West Side families more often prioritize flexibility and a warm, less formal style. In Tribeca and downtown, discretion around well-known principals and travel readiness for Hamptons summers drive compensation upward.
The extras that win top candidates
In a market this competitive, the offer decides. Guaranteed hours, paid overtime after 40 hours as required by New York law, health insurance contributions, metro cards or car service for late finishes, and clear travel compensation separate accepted offers from declined ones. We benchmark every offer against current Manhattan placements so our families win the candidates they want.
Budgeting the full picture
Beyond salary, plan for employer payroll taxes (the nanny tax), workers' compensation insurance as required in New York, and paid leave. A specialized agency structures the complete package — compliant, competitive and clear — before the first interview takes place.
