Estate Manager vs. House Manager: Which Does Your Home Need?
Estate manager and house manager are among the most confused titles in private service. Choosing the wrong one means either overpaying for capacity you do not use — or under-hiring and wondering why nothing runs smoothly.
The house manager
A house manager runs one residence day to day: supervising housekeepers, coordinating vendors, managing household inventories, receiving deliveries and guests. Think of the role as the chief operating officer of a single home. Typical US salaries range from $80,000 to $130,000.
The estate manager
An estate manager operates at a higher altitude: multiple residences, larger teams, significant budgets, construction projects, security coordination and direct reporting to the principals or family office. Salaries typically range from $130,000 to $250,000 or more for multi-estate portfolios.
A simple rule of thumb
- One residence, small team — a house manager is usually right
- Two or more residences, or a staff of five or more — you need an estate manager
- Renovation or new-build projects ahead — choose estate-level experience
- Unsure — a consultation costs nothing and prevents an expensive mis-hire
Elite Swiss places both roles with families from Los Angeles to The Hamptons. In a short consultation we help you define the role precisely — before a single candidate is presented.
