Live-In vs. Live-Out Nanny: Which Arrangement Fits Your Family?
One of the first decisions in any nanny search is whether your nanny lives in your home or comes daily. Both models work beautifully — for different families and different homes.
The live-in nanny
A live-in nanny has their own private room or suite in your home and is typically available earlier, later and more flexibly — ideal for travel-heavy families, newborns and unpredictable schedules. In exchange you provide accommodation, and in most markets the salary runs slightly below a comparable live-out role.
The live-out nanny
A live-out (daily) nanny works fixed, contracted hours and goes home at night. Your home stays fully private after hours. Expect $5–$10 more per hour than a live-in arrangement in cities like New York or Los Angeles — and less flexibility for early mornings or spontaneous evenings.
How to decide
- Frequent travel, infants, overnight needs — live-in
- School-age children, fixed routines — live-out is usually enough
- Guest suite or staff quarters available — live-in becomes attractive
- Value evening privacy above all — live-out
- Unsure — many families start live-out and add overnight support later
